Hardware Sizing Guide

How to Choose the Right Knobs & Pulls for Your Project

Knobs vs. Pulls

Understanding when to use each type of hardware.

Knobs

  • Best for cabinet doors
  • Great for smaller drawers
  • Classic, timeless look
  • Single screw hole installation
  • Easiest to replace or swap

Pulls

  • Best for drawers (easier grip)
  • Ideal for heavy doors & large cabinets
  • Modern, sleek appearance
  • Two screw holes (center-to-center)
  • More ergonomic for daily use
Designer tip: Most kitchens use pulls on drawers and knobs on doors — but pulls everywhere is the modern trend. There's no wrong answer here. Choose what feels right to you.

The Rule of Thirds

Pull length should be approximately 1/3 the width of the drawer front.

12" Drawer4" Pull
12" wide
4" pull
18" Drawer6" Pull
18" wide
6" pull
24" Drawer8" Pull
24" wide
8" pull
30" Drawer10-12" Pull
30" wide
10-12" pull
Remember: This is a guideline, not a rule. Go larger for a bolder look, smaller for minimal. The most important thing is that it feels right in your hand and looks balanced on the cabinet face.

Center-to-Center Explained

The most important number when shopping for pulls.

Center-to-center (CC) is the distance between the centers of the two screw holes on a pull. This is the measurement that determines whether a pull will fit your existing cabinet holes — or what size holes you need to drill for new installations.

How CC Is Measured

The distance between the center of each screw hole

Screw hole
Screw hole
Center-to-Center
3"
76mm
Small pulls & knob-pulls
3-3/4"
96mm
Most common standard
5"
128mm
Mid-size pulls
6-5/16"
160mm
Large & appliance pulls
Replacing existing hardware? Measure the center-to-center distance of your current pulls before shopping. Your new pulls must match the same CC measurement unless you want to fill and re-drill holes. Knobs only have one screw hole, so they can replace any hardware with minimal patching.

Choosing Your Finish

How to match hardware finishes to your kitchen or bath.

Warm Metals

Gold, Brass, Copper — pair beautifully with warm wood tones, cream cabinetry, and natural stone countertops.

Cool Metals

Chrome, Nickel, Stainless — pair with cool grays, crisp whites, and modern kitchen designs.

Dark Metals

Matte Black, Oil Rubbed Bronze — versatile finishes that work with virtually everything, from farmhouse to ultra-modern.

Mixed Metals

It's OK to mix! Use one dominant finish and one accent. Example: matte black pulls with brass knobs, or nickel pulls with a brass faucet.

Placement Tips

Where to position hardware on your cabinets for the best look and function.

Upper cabinet
Lower cabinet

Knobs on Doors

Standard: Center of the door panel.
Modern: On the corner closest to the countertop for a cleaner line.

Upper Cabinets

Place the pull or knob at the bottom corner of the door — closest to where your hand naturally reaches.

Lower Cabinets

Place the pull or knob at the top corner of the door — again, where your hand naturally goes.

Drawers

Center horizontally. For tall drawer fronts, position the pull in the upper third. For small drawers, center vertically.
